There is a strong trend in the demand for regional and organic products. Next to EU labels for the protected geographical origin and organic quality, there are numerous new quality seals in Germany, which declare and proof the quality of regional products (for example, "Tested Quality" - Schleswig-Holstein).
However, there is a lack of secure detection methods for the efficient control of the geographical origin of food and for prevention of consumer fraud ("food fraud"). The BMEL has addressed this issue with the funding initiative "Origin of food" in the context of the Innovation Program, which specifically targets industrial research.
The aim of GALAB`s development is the establishment of analytical and chemometric method for the reliable proof of origin and authenticity of food. We focus on organic and regional products.. For this purpose, non-targeted metabolome analyzes of selected plant products are performed by high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) and evaluated by chemometric methods. The characteristic markers obtained are identified and fed into a database.
Thus, in the near future, the authenticity of food can be determined.
