The RECA cooperative is an association of smallholders from the states of Rondônia, Amazonas and Acre in the east of the Brazilian Amazon. RECA has been committed to sustainable development since its inception, and is actively promoting the reforestation of deforested areas and the introduction of environmentally sustainable forms of production.
The cooperative advises and supports smallholder families in the implementation of so-called agroforestry systems, in which different types of fruit trees, palm trees and timber and also crops are integrated in one area, thereby preserving biodiversity and preventing soil degradation. Through this system, the small-scale producers can diversify their sources of income and at the same time produce in an ecologically sustainable manner and preserve the environment. The most important products include palm hearts, fruit pulps such as Açaí and Cupuassu, as well as vegetable oils for cosmetic production, which are obtained from various tree seeds. To date, RECA has implemented agroforestry systems on a total area of approximately 2000 hectares. Furthermore
RECA has also made a name for itself beyond Brazil through its social commitment and its contribution to the development of smallholder organizations. The cooperative specifically promotes women and young people through education and training offers, thereby helping to strengthen their position and perspectives within the rural communities.
Today, over 1,500 families in rural Amazonia benefit directly and indirectly from the work of the cooperative, increasing their income by selling their products at fair prices and at the same time contributing to protecting the environment in the Amazon region.
