UNAPROL, Consorzio Olivicolo Italiano (Italian Olive Oil Consortium), is an association in the olive oil sector that works both at the national and European Community level. It represents the interests of 160 thousand associated producers in Italy organized into regional economic entities comprising 258 thousand hectares of quality production and 10 thousand companies with full traceability of their production. The Consortium has always been dedicated to supporting the production of olive oil with multiple activities for the traceability of the supply chain, improvement of quality, improvement of the environment, promotional events, information and education, market analysis and marketing support.
With its “Looking for the perfect food” motto, the EcceOlio project seeks to instill a culture focussed on excellence. By increasing awareness among consumers and those working within the sector, they will be able to verify for themselves the value and benefits of certified extra virgin olive oil.
The key concept of the project strategy is aimed at involving both specialists and consumers, so that each of them can offer their own specific contribution to increasing awareness about the rewarding aspects of quality European oil productions.
Continuous research sheds light on the important elements that go into extra virgin olive oils’ production, such as the wealth of varieties, the untainted naturalness of the product, its origin, environmental sustainability, expertise, supply chain traceability and the BIO, PDO and PGI excellence marks, taste and nutritional values, compatibility with the Mediterranean Diet and modern nutritional criteria, and many others as well.
It is a rare find in food products to have a means such as this that is open to everyone to express their research into the ideal synthesis. How to we bring together the pleasantness of smell and taste , the versatility in how to use it and the nutritional and health advantages of extra virgin olive oil? There is not a single or standard answer, but better information and greater public awareness regarding extra virgin olive oil will allow the consumer to make the best decisions about what to buy and consume.
