The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) was established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act passed by the Parliament in December, 1985. The Act (2 of 1986) came into effect from 13th February, 1986 by a notification issued in the Gazette of India: Extraordinary: Part-II [Sec. 3(ii): 13.2.1986). APEDA is statutory organisation for promotion of exports of fresh and procssed agricultural products under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. APEDA is also secretariat for National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). The national programme involves accreditation of Certification Bodies, standards for organic production, promotion of organic product exports, etc. The NPOP standards for production and accreditation system have been recognized by EU and Switzerland for unprocessed plant products as equivalent to their country standards. USDA has recognized NPOP conformity assessment procedures of accreditation as equivalent to US. With these recognitions, Indian organic products duly certified by accredited certification bodies of India are accepted by importing countries. Total export during 2015-16 was 263687 MT. Realization was around 298 million USD. India exported organic products to EU, US, Canada, Switzerland, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, South East Asian countries, Middle East, South Africa, etc.
