Demeter – trademark guaranteeing Biodynamic quality
Demeter stands for products that originate from Biodynamic agriculture. This, the oldest branch of organic farming, goes back to an impulse from Rudolf Steiner who at the beginning of the 20th century founded it along with the Waldorf education system and anthroposophical medicine.
The pioneers in organics have succeeded in further developing Demeter into a modern agricultural method that has prospects for the future. As a result Biodynamics is accepted as the most sustainable form of land use. It ensures that the humus layer grows continuously – a fact that has been scientifically substantiated by research trials spanning over 20 years in which the differences between conventional, organic and Biodynamic plots have been studied. This is of particular importance when climate change is considered because large amounts of carbon dioxide are bound in humus and this works actively against the greenhouse effect.
Through the use of subtly active farm-made preparations from manure, medicinal plants and minerals, soil fertility on the Biodynamic farm is promoted in a sustainable fashion, and the characteristic taste and aroma of the food so produced is enhanced. The product spectrum ranges from antipasti to baby food, from wine to rusks, from Demeter cotton to cosmetics.
With an unparalleled Co-brand strategy, Demeter guarantees Biodynamic quality to the consumer and the processor through his name vouches for conscientious care in processing.
In Germany there are about 1400 farmers with over 66,000 hectares of land in Biodynamic production. Demeter e. V. has some 330 Demeter processors and producers as members as well as contracts with wholesalers in the health/whole food industry.
Demeter is internationally present as an organic trademark on all continents. From Argentina to Hungary, in over 50 countries with some 4,500 farmers on 142,000 hectares of land, the Biodynamic method is used and certified to the strict Demeter standards. World wide the turnover of Demeter products is estimated to be of the order of 220 million Euro.
