Baobab Products Mozambique is registered in Mozambique and based in Chimoio, Manica Province. It was set up by Eco-MICAIA Ltd (www.micaia.org), a social enterprise working to create market opportunities for smallholders and primary producers.
A truly inclusive business: BPM is a shareholding company and Eco-MICAIA set aside 20% of the shares for the women Baobab harvesters. BPM and MICAIA will work together to help the harvesters play an active role in the planning and running of our company, and ultimately share in its success.
An environmentally sustainable business: We are committed to sustainable harvesting, replanting of Baobab trees, and running our Company to the highest environmentally sustainable standards. All Harvesters who supply BPM receive training in sustainable harvesting and organic control systems. We work closely with our main NGO partner, MICAIA Foundation (see below) to enable communities living in and close to baobab forest areas to establish natural resource management plans and secure protection for the forests.
An award-winning business: In 2014 and 2016 BPM won prestigious SEED Awards for sustainable business in Africa. The awards recognized BPM’s commitment to securing a positive ‘triple bottom line’ (economic, social and environmental benefits), transforming the local baobab value chain from informal exploitation of harvesters by traders to a commercial value chain in which the women harvesters have a real stake.
Baobab is Africa’s ‘superfruit’. The fruit pod contains a seed coated in white powdery pulp. That powder is packed with Vitamins and nutrients
- 4 times more Vitamin C/100g than an orange
- 6 times as much Potassium/100g as in banana
- 3.5 times the Calcium per 100g of milk and 1.5 times the calcium of almonds, the leading plant source of Calcium.
Baobab’s anti-oxidant power is medically proven and it is full of dietary fibre (four times as much per 100g than an apple). And it tastes great too!
Baobab fruit powder
Baobab Fruit Powder is a naturally dehydrated fruit powder obtained from the endocarp (internal ripe fruit) of Adansonia digitata L. by mechanical separation. The powder is homogenized. No additional process is applied and no preservatives or additives are added. Baobab fruit powder is 100% natural.
Baobab powder from Mozambique is typically light cream in colour, with a pleasant flavor reminiscent of caramel pear with a distinctive citrus edge.
BPM’s primary product is BaoVita. This is our top grade powder, organically certified by Ecocert.
BaoVita is available for export in 20Kg lined sacks.
We also offer the powder as a finished product packed in 150gm and 350gm re-sealable packs. Already on the market in southern Africa, this product can be adapted easily for retail in any country.
In the national market BPM already supplies conventional powder packed under our brand ‘Malambe’. This is available in 500gm, 10Kg and 20Kg packs.
Almost all of the people from whom BPM buys baobab are women. The women live in one of the driest parts of Manica Province where agriculture is difficult and life is hard. Baobab is a critical resource and a rare source of income. These amazing women are leading the change in their communities, using income from Baobab to school their children, launch other small businesses, and invest in their homes. The women also receive support from MICAIA, our partner in development. In 2016 BPM had supply contracts with 450 women and we anticipate this will increase to 600+ in 2017.
BPM was set up by Eco-MICAIA Ltd, a social enterprise set up in 2008 in Mozambique by Andrew Kingman (UK) and Milagre Nuvunga (Mozambique). It is directly linked with MICAIA Foundation (NGO). While Andrew leads the company and its work on natural products, Milagre leads the Foundation in its work helping people escape poverty and build sustainable livelihoods.
