Apfel:gut, Organic Fruit Breeding is a group of
12 organic fruit farmers and breeders working
on organic orchards

  • with the individual care of regional farmers
  • with the great genetic variety of heirloom apples
  • for vigorous varieties suitable for organic fruit growing
  • with the aim of minimizing pesticide usage
  • with transparency and charity

Fruit breeding has increasingly been transferred into labora-
tories. Genetic engineering methods are used to produce new
patent-registered cultivars, which are not freely available or
marketable. Gene technologies including Crispr/Cas are an in-
calculable risk. The organic regulation around the world prohi-
bit the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in organic
products. Most modern cultivars can largely be traced back to
five ancestors, which constitute a narrow genetic basis that ne-
gatively influences the vitality of today ́s apples. Golden Deli-
cious, Cox Orange, Jonathan, McIntosh, and Red Delicious are
susceptible to typical illnesses like scab, mildew, and canker. To
address this high scab susceptibility, monogenic dominant re-
sistances have been introgressed into modern varieties. These
resistances have been broken down in a few years after usage
in the field.

Our Approach
We make pomological knowledge available for ecological bree-
ding – crossing the most robust ancient cultivars with the best
modern varieties used currently in organic cultivation. Out of
our progenies, we select the healthiest plants. We implement
the vitality of some old apple and pear cultivars in our new
selections. From these robust and vital plants, we look for the
ones with the best fruit qualities and sufficient yield.

Breeding Process
All steps in the breeding process are conducted by partners of
the project, according to the principles of organic agriculture.
The first crosses were performed in 2009 and open-pollinated
seedlings have been growing since 1997. The seeds from the
hybrids are sown on the spot and distributed again as seedlings
to the other partner farmers. This way, the characteristics of the
crossings can be tested at different locations. It can take five
years or longer before the seedlings yield fruit results. We need
perseverance to develop a variety and test its characteristics.

Research results are shared among professionals and interested
followers. We have a network with the following groups:

• Organic trial and advisory board of northern Germany (ÖON)
• University of Oldenburg (project Egon)
• Föko (the backing group for organic orcharding)

We maintain contact with other fruit breeders/initiatives and hold
training sessions with professionals, advisors and, researchers.
