Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are a mix of triglycerides of saturated fatty acids with a chain length of 6 to 12 carbon atoms, mainly C8 (caprylic acid) and C10 (capric acid). Our MCT oil is obtained through physical treatment only and as such not subject to REACH registration. The separation process is non-chemical, so there are no chemical residues to worry about.
One of the major advantages of MCT is that, being fully saturated, it is an inert and stable emollient. It has many cosmetic applications in aerosols, creams, ointments, lotions and lipsticks.
From a nutritional perspective, the 2 main advantages of medium chain fatty acids compared to LCTs (long chain):
- faster intestine-liver transport (without needing to be emulsified first and then re-esterified in chylomicrons)
- are more effective metabolized thanks to the "ease" with which they enter the mitochondria (without the need for carnitine).
For this reason, they are a formidable energy source for sportsmen, because on top of that they do not affect the glycemic index as sugars would do. Thus, one gets fats that are immediately available and that do not form deposits. Moreover, one gram of fat provides 9kcal versus sugar that provides 5.5kcal per gram. As such it is also recommended in weight loss programs.
