The black chia seed from Nicaragua has been transferred by the Aztecs from Mexico to Nicaragua. In Nicaragua this original chia grows to a height of about 800 m. It is cultivated in hilly area by small farmers. Cultivation and care (control of weeds) of crops is done manually. The use of herbicides and pesticides is completely eliminated.
Unlike his contemporary Mexican and South American relatives the Nicaraguan chia has an intense, black colour. White seeds are practically non-existent. ChiaNica® has a high omega-3 content and in relation thereto, only small amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is approximately 4 : 1.
