Di Giovanna family vineyards and winery are situated inside the protected Nature Reserve of Monte Genuardo.
The entire property is certified organic since 1997.
The vineyards were replanted in the early 1980’s by Gunther & Klaus Di Giovanna’s father Aurelio, after an in-depth terroir study. Average vine age is 30 years old. The Di Giovanna vineyards of 120 acres lie in the D.O.C.’s of Sambuca di Sicilia (Agrigento) and Contessa Entellina (Palermo) at some of the highest altitudes in western Sicily:
1,800- 2,600 feet above sea level.
Here the native Sicilian varieties become the pillar of the family’s production: Grillo, Nero d’Avola & Nerello Mascalese, planted on tufaceous, limestone rich soils.
All of the wines are made organically and manually, using primarily native yeasts, by brothers Gunther & Klaus, with the assistance of in-house enologist Gianfranco Zito (Sicilian) and consultant group Denis Dubourdieu of Bordeaux. The white wines are vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees, temperature controlled. The reds have partial, moderate barrel ageing, acting as a perfect ‘breathing’ container: Quintessence 225 liter barriques (1-3 years).
The wines are exported internationally since 2005 in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Canada, USA, Colombia, Japan and China.
