Nowadays, progress and modern times are forcing manufacturers to increase capacities. With its indoor premises of over 15,000 sq. m, Agria is the largest Italian “Factory” involved in the selection and packaging of dried pulses and cereals.
We are constantly committed to meeting demands of our customers.
In 1957 our founder Romualdo Aliberti set up a food company that specialised in selection and packaging of dried pulses and cereals, building the first plant for such product. Since the beginning we demonstrated a market oriented business sense: the first use of a cardboard packet for packaging dried pulses and cereals which, since then, has transformed the company from selling loose, undifferentiated products, into products with a memorable, distinctive brand: “Select”. Select SpA was founded in 1982 as a logical development of the company.
Work began on the current factory which opened in 1984. The overall surface area of 40,000 sq.m. was turned into 15,000 sq.m. of indoor premises and was fitted out with modern equipment and machinery for the selection and packaging of dried pulses and cereals. In 1989 the company name was changed to Agria SpA. The following years the brand gained leadership in this market segment. This took place concurrently with changing dietary habits of consumers.
Improved information about food, raised awareness of the number of diseases linked to “wellbeing”, and the increased popularity of vegetarian and vegan cooking influenced individuals towards choosing healthy and nutritious foods. Dried pulses and cereals are now a fundamental and essential part of the Mediterranean diet, awarded UNESCO heritage status, and are considered worldwide to be a complete well-balanced contribution to wellbeing.
The first thing that a leading brand must ensure is people’s health safety together with environmental safety. Safety is an intrinsic part of the quality and value of our products as well as being a must for responsible manufacturing.
When it comes to food safety there should be no distinctions between rich and poor, quality must be available at a fair price.

The company’s in-house Quality Assurance Team follows an extremely simple strategy: focusing on the excellence of pulses and cereals. Product checks, chemical, physical and organoleptic tests are carried out on all of the raw material arriving at the factory and is assisted by external accreditation bodies. All the manufacturing stages “from selection to packaging” are systematically checked to prevent any risk of product contamination.
The company has awarded all voluntary food safety certification related to the BRC (British Retail Consortium) and IFS (International Food Standards) standards. These protect people safety and ensure that our products offer not only value for money, but also practicallity and wholesomeness, being absolutely natural and not pre-cooked or dehydrated using industrial processes. Respect for culinary traditions is our response to people needs and not just marketing strategies.
We work to ensure constant improvements of our products which have to meet one basic requirement: people’s health safety. For this reason we invest each year in research and development. The creation of new product, new packaging and new product lines are part of a lengthy process which consists of several stages and involves interaction between various experts, some of whom are company specialists and others external consultants.
