HISTORIC REVIEW Corpocampo was founded in 2003 and has two production plants in the south-pacific Colombian jungles, on the shores of the Guapi River, located in the Municipality of Guapi Cauca and Tumaco Nariño. In association with the afro-colombian and natives communities of the region, Corpocampo has advanced the use of the Naidi or Açaí palm (Euterpe Oleracea), a wild palm abundant to the region. By means of a system which ensures the sustainability of the resource, the hearts of palms are extracted. The production plants have installed a capacity for a yearly produce of nearly 140.000 boxes of palm-hearts in different references of 12 and 24 units per box. In 2006 began the exporting to the European community (France) and afterward to the U.S., Mexican, Chilean and Japanese markets. In 2011, and by the approval of Carrefour France and Almacenes Exito in Colombia (Casino), we have begun to produce the proper brands for these supermarkets, for France as well as Colombia.
PRODUCT The Naidi or Açaí palm (Euterpe Oleracea) in the heart of the shoot of the palm, cooked and cut in pieces of different lengths according to the presentation of each storage container. It is ivory-colored with a cylindrical shape, and has diameters ranging between 1.3 to 3 centimeters. We vacuum-pack the produce in tin cans or glass jars with a preservative containing water, salt, citric acid and ascorbic acid in accordance with the norms established by the industry and commerce of food preserves (Codex Alimentario).
ORGANIC HEARTS OF PALMS SPECIAL CHARACTER The chemical and physical characteristics of the soils where these palms are developed and the external factors derived from the humidity, high temperature and natural fertilizing caused by the high tides, result in a product of excellent quality, flavor and texture with a few organoleptic characteristics superior to other varieties. All this makes it a totally organic product or BIO (with no traces of fungicide, pesticides nor any other kind of chemical fertilizing) with an excellent texture and rich in fiber, vegetable protein and calcium, which has been certified by ECOCERT which applies in the European community and the U.S.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT The special characteristics of the naidi or Açaí palm (Euterpe Oleracea) which is reproduced by means of re-sprouting and by seed, makes this species able to be adequately managed by the afro-colombian and native communities of the region since they only cut the palms which have reached a determined state of maturity and their use is made by periodic rotation, allowing the development of the re-shoots that remain in the plant, aided by the deeper penetration of the solar rays, since the cut serves as a sort of pod. Besides, the waste utilization constitutes a natural fertilizer since they rapidly decompose and are integrated into the soil due to the conditions of high temperature and humidity which accelerates the metabolism. This has all allowed the utilization of this palm for more than 30 years without diminishing the original environmental offer in the same zones.
SOCIAL ASPECTS The pacific zone is the poorest region in the country and there are few job sources. With this industry, close to 1,200 families are benefiting the utilization of the palm and in the industrial process, we generate direct employment to more than 180 single mothers/women. Corpocampo also develops and supports health and education programs which are the most felt need of the area.
